Key specifications

Type Water‑borne decorative coating for interior walls and ceilings, designed to create an iron / oxidised metal effect.
Finish Textured iron‑effect surface with controllable tonal variation and metallic modulation — from soft, sheet‑steel sheen to more pronounced oxidised metal, depending on application method.
Binder / chemistry Acrylic water‑based system containing metallic fillers and pigments for iron‑like reflectance. Low‑VOC formulation for interior decorative use.
Coverage* Indicative coverage: approx. 4–6 m²/L per coat on smooth, primed substrates for standard two‑coat systems.
Coverage will vary with substrate smoothness, absorption and the strength of the desired effect.
Drying / recoat Touch dry: approx. 2–4 hours at 20 °C.
Recoat: approx. 6–8 hours at 20 °C.
Full cure: approx. 7 days at 20 °C under normal conditions.
Application tools Soft spalter brush, roller for basecoats, flexible plastic or stainless‑steel trowel for compression and modulation of the metallic surface.
Tinting All Klondike Ferro colours for the UK are mixed and calibrated by Italian Surface Finishes using the Valpaint tinting system, helping catalogue boards, sample boards and site batches align under UK lighting.
Use Interior feature walls, columns and architectural elements in residential, retail and hospitality projects. Not designed for floors, countertops or permanently wet surfaces.

*Coverage values are indicative. Always verify on a representative sample panel under project conditions.

Compatible substrates

Klondike Ferro is suitable for sound, dry, interior substrates that have been properly prepared:

  • Plaster and skimmed plasterboard (fully cured, smooth and dust‑free).
  • Levelled masonry and cementitious surfaces free from rising damp.
  • Previously painted surfaces that are sound, non‑chalky and correctly primed.

Friable, dusty or highly absorbent areas must be stabilised using a suitable primer/fixative as per Valpaint guidance. Textured substrates should be levelled to achieve a smooth base before the Klondike Ferro system is applied.

System build — Klondike Ferro iron‑effect finish

The exact cycle can vary according to the chosen effect and substrate condition, but a typical Klondike Ferro system in the UK follows this structure:

  1. Substrate preparation — make good all defects; fill, sand and clean. Remove loose coatings and contaminants. Ensure the surface is smooth, stable and dry.
  2. Primer / basecoat — apply the specified Valpaint primer and/or dedicated basecoat for Klondike Ferro to equalise absorption and provide the correct undertone. Apply with roller, ensuring uniform coverage. Allow to dry thoroughly.
  3. First coat of Klondike Ferro — apply a thin coat using brush, roller or trowel to establish the metallic base. Cover the surface evenly, working to a continuous film.
  4. Second Klondike Ferro coat — design stage — apply a second coat and immediately work the product with a spalter brush and/or flexible trowel to create the desired iron‑effect movement and patina. Use irregular strokes and controlled pressure to reveal metallic depth and avoid obvious repeat patterns.
  5. Optional protection — in higher‑use areas or where more frequent cleaning is expected, apply a compatible clear protective finish after full cure to improve washability and resistance to marking.

Project‑specific choreography (e.g. directional streaks, panel‑reference layouts, combined concrete‑and‑metal effects) is developed through ISF sample boards and Academy training.

Drying & curing

  • Touch dry: approx. 2–4 hours at 20 °C.
  • Recoat interval: approx. 6–8 hours at 20 °C, depending on ventilation and film build.
  • Full cure: approx. 7 days at 20 °C before intensive cleaning or application of protective sealer.

Drying and curing times are extended at lower temperatures or higher humidity. Always refer to the latest Valpaint technical documentation for detailed data.

Maintenance

Once fully cured (and sealed where specified), Klondike Ferro can be maintained as follows:

  • Dust with a soft cloth or vacuum with a soft brush attachment.
  • For light marks, wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth and mild neutral detergent.
  • Avoid abrasive pads, scouring powders, strong alkalis, bleach and solvent‑based cleaners.
  • Do not use aggressive cleaning methods that could scratch or burnish the metallic surface.

Health, safety & environment

  • Water‑based, low‑VOC decorative coating; use with adequate ventilation.
  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes; wear suitable gloves and eye protection.
  • Do not ingest; keep out of reach of children.
  • Store in tightly closed original containers between +5 °C and +30 °C; protect from frost.
  • Do not pour residues into drains or watercourses; dispose of waste according to local regulations.
  • Refer to the official Valpaint Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full safety information.
