Microcement Bathrooms & Wet Rooms · UK

Microcement bathrooms & wet rooms with VALPAINT E-VOLUTION PLUS

A fully detailed, Italian-made resin–mineral system for waterproof microcement-style bathrooms, showers and wet rooms, designed, tinted and installed in the UK by Italian Surface Finishes.

Why this page exists. “Microcement bathroom” has become a catch-all term in the UK – kits, DIY systems and ad-hoc build-ups that promise seamless showers but don’t always deliver on waterproofing, crack control or maintenance. This page sets out how we build microcement-style bathrooms and wet rooms properly using E-VOLUTION PLUS and the wider Valpaint decorative range.

Microcement bathrooms & wet rooms Showers & walk-in wet rooms Microcement over tiles Valpaint finishes on a waterproof body
Italian-made, London controlled. E-VOLUTION PLUS is manufactured in Italy and implemented in the UK through Italian Surface Finishes, who manage specification, tinting, training and installation as an official Valpaint distributor.

1. Microcement bathrooms in the UK – the reality

Search for “microcement bathroom” and you’ll find a mix of eye-catching images and very different systems: thin cement kits, paint-plus-sealer cycles, and a few more complex build-ups. Many of these systems work in controlled conditions, but common UK-site problems include:

  • Movement & cracking – unstable screeds or tiled substrates telegraph through thin coats.
  • Waterproofing by sealer only – the body is not waterproof; if the sealer fails, the shower fails.
  • Tile-joint ghosting – joints and lippage showing through on “over tile” microcement showers.
  • Maintenance surprises – aggressive cleaning, hair dyes and cosmetics attacking weak sealers.

E-VOLUTION PLUS exists to solve these issues: it is not a one-bucket “microcement paint”, but a resin–mineral waterproof body system that can carry a wide range of Valpaint decorative finishes in bathrooms and wet rooms.

2. E-VOLUTION PLUS – the waterproof body behind the microcement look

At the heart of our bathroom and wet-room specification is E-VOLUTION PLUS – a multi-layer system combining primers, an epoxy–mineral body coat, smoothing layers and polyurethane top coats. It is designed for:

  • Shower interiors & walk-in wet rooms
  • Complete bathrooms (walls, floors, niches, vanity tops)
  • Microcement-style floors in bathrooms, WCs and spa areas

What E-VOLUTION does

  • Creates a continuous waterproof body on walls and floors.
  • Works over tiles, screeds and plasterboard when prepared correctly.
  • Receives Evolution-approved Valpaint decorative finishes as the visible layer.
  • Is sealed with professional polyurethane top coats for wear and cleaning.

What the client sees

  • A seamless “microcement bathroom” with no grout lines.
  • Walls, floors and niches that read as one continuous surface.
  • A finish chosen from the Valpaint portfolio: concrete, marble, stone, metallic, silk, suede, etc.

Full technical details are on the E-VOLUTION PLUS Technical Data Sheet and Application Guide, with a dedicated Evolution Plus FAQ for deeper questions.

3. Microcement over tiles vs new screeds

One of the most common questions is whether a microcement bathroom can be installed over existing tiles. With E-VOLUTION PLUS the answer is usually “yes” – provided the tiles are stable and properly prepared.

Typical approaches we use in UK bathrooms
Scenario Approach with E-VOLUTION PLUS
Over stable tiles Tiles abraded, cleaned, primed with ADP + PRIMER AZ + CT10, then E-VOLUTION PLUS body coat, decorative finish and top coats applied over the top.
New screed / build Screed designed and commissioned properly, then primed and treated with the full E-VOLUTION PLUS cycle on walls & floors.
Boarded walls in refurbishment High-quality cement boards or plasterboard over studs, primed and treated with the Evolution body and chosen Valpaint finish.
Control remains critical. We always assess substrate design, falls, drains and junctions before recommending microcement-style bathrooms. Italian Surface Finishes can review drawings and site photos as part of the process.

4. From designer-plaster looks to waterproof finishes

Valpaint has two “worlds” of coatings:

  • Lime-based designer plasters like the Meteore 10 family, which are superb as visual references for concrete, marble and stone looks, and
  • E-VOLUTION-compatible decorative systems that we actually use inside the wet-room cycle.

In wet areas, we do not apply Meteore 10 or other lime-based plasters directly inside the Evolution body. Instead:

  • We use the Meteore 10 pages and catalogue as a design language – to agree the concrete / marble / stone “reading” with the client, and
  • We recreate those aesthetics on Evolution-compatible bases (for example Meteore 12) within the E-VOLUTION PLUS cycle where a fully waterproof system is needed.
Design library vs technical system. Meteore 10 is lime-based and lives in the “designer plaster” world; Evolution Plus lives in the waterproof resin–mineral world. We borrow the Meteore 10 look and deliver it using the E-VOLUTION + Valpaint finishes system where waterproofing is critical.

5. What waterproof artistic finishes Evolution can achieve

This is where Evolution Plus is unique versus most “microcement” systems on the UK market: instead of being locked into one concrete texture, we can build a waterproof body and then apply a wide range of Valpaint artistic finishes – many of which competitors simply cannot offer in a coherent, tested system.

Silk & satin bathrooms – Valsetin & Valsetin 2

For projects where the brief is “hotel-style”, “soft luxury” or “silk plaster look”, we often use the finishes below. Tap each product name to open it in a new tab.

Over the E-VOLUTION PLUS body, these finishes give soft, light-catching walls in bathrooms and spa spaces – with the waterproof structure behind them doing the hard work.

Suede & soft touch – Valrenna & Valrenna 2

Where a suede or buckskin effect is desired in dry bathroom zones and vanity areas, we use: tap the product names to view each finish.

Over Evolution, these systems create a tactile, warm read that still sits inside a controlled, specification-ready cycle.

Metallic & industrial – Klondike, Valmetal, Sabulador, Arteco 7, Mavericks

For more expressive or industrial bathrooms and powder rooms, Evolution Plus allows us to use a range of metallic and patina systems. Tap any product name to open it.

These systems let us create brushed metals, rust effects, patina glazes, soft metallic sheens and even more “artistic concrete” readings on walls in bathrooms and powder rooms, always chosen carefully by zone (direct wet vs splash vs dry).

Decorative glazes & accent walls

Because E-VOLUTION PLUS is the waterproof body, we can be more adventurous with surface design in dry zones:

  • Metallic feature walls behind basins or freestanding baths.
  • Patina or glaze bands with Arteco 7 → over an Evolution body.
  • Mavericks → “architectural concrete” features in powder rooms and dry WC walls.

Many UK microcement suppliers can only offer a single concrete texture; Evolution Plus + Valpaint allows a whole library of artistic waterproof finishes within a coherent system, specified and controlled by Italian Surface Finishes.

6. Example build-ups – microcement bathrooms, showers & wet rooms

Every project is detailed case-by-case, but typical UK build-ups we recommend include:

Walk-in shower (over tiles)

  • Tile substrate survey & mechanical abrasion
  • ADP + PRIMER AZ + CT10, joints filled with SB30 + CT90
  • GEL EP40 + CT50 body coat with reinforcement where required
  • Optional smoothing / pore control layer
  • E-VOLUTION-compatible decorative finish (for example a Meteore 12-based look)
  • AR60/AR70 polyurethane top coats + SG15 to seals & details

Full bathroom (new build)

  • Screeds and boards designed for wet rooms (falls, build-up, heating)
  • Prime and apply the full E-VOLUTION PLUS cycle across walls & floors
  • Mix of finishes: concrete or stone reading in wet zones, silk / metallic / suede finishes in dry areas
  • All junctions, niches and fixtures detailed with SG15 and appropriate silicones

7. Key questions about microcement bathrooms

Full technical questions are handled in the E-VOLUTION PLUS FAQ. Below are the essentials we’re asked most often in the UK.

Can I really have a microcement shower over existing tiles?

In many cases, yes – provided the tiles are stable and the correct Evolution Plus over-tile cycle is followed (abrasion, ADP + PRIMER AZ + CT10, joint filling, reinforcement and full body coat). We do not simply skim a single “microcement” coat over glossy tiles and rely on a sealer.

Is the system fully waterproof, or just water-resistant?

E-VOLUTION PLUS is designed as a waterproof body system for wet rooms, using epoxy and polyurethane chemistry as well as mineral components. When installed to specification, the combination of body coat and top coats provides full waterproofing for showers and bathrooms – with details treated carefully at drains, corners and junctions.

How is this different to a simple microcement kit?

Simple microcement kits often use a thin cement coat and a sealer; performance depends heavily on that sealer and substrate. Our approach uses a tested, multi-layer system from Italy, with clear technical data, and is installed by trained applicators under the Italian Surface Finishes framework.

Can I use different finishes in the same bathroom?

Yes. A common strategy is: a concrete or stone reading in direct wet zones, silk or suede finishes (Valsetin / Valrenna) in dry areas, and metallic accents (Klondike, Valmetal, Sabulador, Arteco 7, Mavericks) where appropriate – all tied together by the Evolution Plus body behind the scenes.

8. Why work with Italian Surface Finishes & VALPAINT

Italian Surface Finishes – UK design & control

Italian Surface Finishes is the architectural point of contact for these systems in the UK. We operate the London Studio and Valpaint Academy, manage tinting and specification, train installers and coordinate the Approved Applicator Network – so there is one accountable team looking after your bathroom or wet-room project from concept to completion.

VALPAINT – Italian manufacture

VALPAINT S.p.A. manufactures E-VOLUTION PLUS and the wider decorative range in Italy, combining resin chemistry, mineral coatings and decorative expertise. Italian Surface Finishes works with these systems in the UK as an official Valpaint distributor, bringing Italian manufacture into a controlled, London-based specification framework.

For serious wet-room and microcement bathroom work, we always recommend engaging a trained installer and involving the ISF technical team early – rather than treating this like a commodity coating.
