Klondike Corten — Technical Data Sheet
Key performance data for this Corten steel wall system: composition, coverage, drying, substrates and maintenance for UK projects where rusted‑steel feature walls are being specified.
ITALIAN‑MADE VALPAINT SYSTEM · SPECIFIED, TINTED & SUPPORTED BY ITALIAN SURFACE FINISHES IN UK
Key specifications
| Type | Water‑borne decorative coating system for creating a Corten steel effect on interior walls and selected façade surfaces (when using the façade‑grade TOP variant). |
|---|---|
| Finish | Warm rusted‑steel appearance with layered oxidation tones, vertical or trowelled movement and a matte‑to‑satin sheen depending on compression and topcoat. |
| Variants |
Klondike Corten MID — interior‑grade decorative system. Klondike Corten TOP — exterior‑capable decorative system with enhanced resistance and “lotus effect” self‑cleaning properties. |
| Coverage* |
Indicative coverage from Valpaint documents: • Spatolato (trowelled) effect: approx. 2–3 m²/L in one coat on smooth substrates. • Dripping (Colato) effect: approx. 1.5–2 m²/L for two coats on smooth substrates. Exact consumption depends on effect, substrate and technique; always confirm on sample panels. |
| Drying / recoat |
Touch dry: approx. 2–3 hours at 20 °C. Recoat: approx. 6–8 hours at 20 °C. Full cure: typically 7 days for full mechanical resistance. |
| Application tools | Flexible stainless trowel (Spatolato effect) · Brush + trowel combination (Dripping/Colato effect) · Roller for primers and basecoats. See ISF Tools & Accessories for recommended tools. |
| Tinting | All Klondike Corten colours are tinted and calibrated in the UK by Italian Surface Finishes using Valpaint’s tinting system, for consistent colour between catalogue panels and on‑site work. |
| Use | Interior feature walls, columns and architectural elements. When specified with the TOP variant and the full façade cycle, Klondike Corten may also be used for selected external façade applications following Valpaint guidance. |
*Coverage values are indicative and must be confirmed via project‑specific sampling.
Compatible substrates
Klondike Corten can be applied to stable, dry, smooth substrates once correctly prepared:
- New plaster and skim‑coated plasterboard (fully cured, smooth and dust‑free).
- Levelled masonry and cementitious render without active moisture problems.
- Previously painted surfaces that are sound, non‑chalky and correctly primed.
For rough or uneven substrates, use the specified Rasante R7 levelling coat prior to the Corten system. For smooth substrates, the specified Primer 1200 is typically used to regulate absorption before applying Klondike Corten.
System build — Corten steel effect
The full system must follow the detailed Valpaint specification. In summary, the UK system for Klondike Corten works as follows:
- Substrate preparation — repair and level the substrate; sand and remove dust. For rough surfaces, apply Rasante R7 as a levelling coat and allow to dry fully.
- Primer / regulating coat — on smooth substrates (or Rasante where specified), apply Primer 1200 as the regulating undercoat. This equalises absorption and provides the correct base for the Corten cycle.
- Basecoat — apply the Klondike Corten basecoat (tinted according to the chosen reference) using roller or brush, ensuring full and even coverage. This colour strongly influences the final Corten reading. Allow to dry fully.
-
Effect coats (Spatolato or Dripping) — depending on the desired texture:
- Spatolato effect: apply Klondike Corten with a flexible stainless trowel in overlapping strokes, compressing to create a trowelled Corten plate effect.
- Dripping effect: apply with brush and trowel in a two‑coat cycle to create vertical streaks and run‑off patina.
- Optional protective sealer — in higher‑use areas or where more frequent cleaning is expected, apply a compatible clear protective finish after full cure to improve washability and resistance to marking. For façades (TOP variant), use the specified exterior‑grade topcoat.
Project‑specific choreography (e.g. directional streaks, panel proportioning, combinations with concrete or stone) is developed through ISF sample boards and Academy training.
Drying & curing
- Touch dry: approx. 2–3 hours at 20 °C.
- Recoat interval: approx. 6–8 hours at 20 °C, depending on humidity and ventilation.
- Full cure: typically around 7 days at 20 °C for full mechanical resistance.
Do not expose freshly applied Corten finishes to heavy condensation, rain (on façades) or aggressive cleaning until fully cured.
Maintenance
Once cured and, where required, sealed, Klondike Corten surfaces can be maintained as follows:
- Dust periodically with a soft cloth or vacuum using a soft brush attachment.
- For sealed surfaces, clean with a soft damp cloth and mild neutral detergent.
- Avoid abrasive pads, harsh scourers and aggressive chemical cleaners.
Health, safety & environment
- Water‑based, low‑VOC decorative system for interior use and, in the TOP variant, façades.
- Apply with adequate ventilation; avoid inhalation of spray and dust from sanding.
- Avoid contact with skin and eyes; wear suitable gloves and eye protection.
- Store sealed between +10 °C and +30 °C; protect from frost and direct heat.
- Dispose of residues and empty containers in accordance with local regulations.
Technical & specification summary
Klondike Corten by Valpaint, supplied and supported in the UK by Italian Surface Finishes, offers designers a robust, repeatable way to specify Corten steel wall finishes across interior and selected exterior contexts. It sits within the wider Valpaint × ISF framework alongside concrete, stone and metallic systems, enabling coherent, materials‑led design for UK projects.
