What Klondike Corten is
Klondike Corten is a decorative system that recreates the warm rust, mineral depth and patina of Corten steel. Curated by Italian Surface Finishes for the UK market, it offers a controlled, repeatable way to achieve premium rusted‑metal feature walls in hospitality, retail and contemporary homes.
The system can be worked in different choreographies — from trowelled “plate” readings to vertical Dripping effects that recall rain‑run weathering on steel façades. This guide focuses on the UK‑approved sequence for interior walls.
Step‑by‑step method
-
Prepare the substrate
Ensure the surface is sound, smooth and clean. Fill cracks and imperfections, sand to a uniform level and remove all dust. For rough blockwork or render, apply Rasante R7 as a levelling coat where specified, and allow to dry fully. -
Apply the primer / undercoat
On smooth or Rasante‑levelled surfaces, apply Primer 1200 (or the system‑specified primer) with roller to regulate absorption and create a uniform base. Allow to dry fully according to the technical sheet. -
Roll on the Corten basecoat
Apply the Klondike Corten basecoat in the selected reference colour using a short‑pile roller, working corner‑to‑corner for an even film. This layer strongly influences the final Corten tone. Allow to dry thoroughly. -
Apply the Corten effect coat(s)
Depending on the desired effect:- Spatolato (trowelled) effect: apply Klondike Corten with a flexible stainless trowel in overlapping strokes, compressing to create trowelled plate‑like panels with subtle directional movement.
- Dripping (Colato) effect: build the effect in two coats, using brush and trowel to create vertical “rain‑run” streaks and deeper rust transitions.
-
Refine and balance
While the Corten coat is still workable, adjust pressure and stroke direction to balance warm/cool oxidation patches and achieve the desired movement and patina. Stand back regularly to assess the composition across the entire wall. -
Optional protective sealer
In kitchens, commercial interiors or where additional durability is required, apply the specified clear sealer (e.g. Vetro Opaco/Lucido or system equivalent) after full curing. Follow the data sheet with regard to dilution, coats and drying intervals.

Professional tips
- Plan for a slightly vertical bias in movement to mirror real weathering patterns on steel.
- Keep the trowel edge clean; any burrs or dried product will leave unwanted scratches or lines.
- Vary pressure and angle to move between matte zones and deeper oxidised highlights.
- Always evaluate sample boards under the actual project lighting before committing to a full wall.
- For large feature walls, consider working in pairs — one lays on product, the other refines and blends.
Safety & environment
Klondike Corten is a water‑based, low‑VOC decorative system. It is suitable for residential, retail and hospitality interiors when used according to Valpaint guidance.
- Ensure good ventilation during application and drying.
- Wear gloves and eye protection; avoid prolonged skin or eye contact.
- Store sealed between +10 °C and +30 °C; protect from frost.
