VALPAINT METALLIC WALL FINISH · APPLIED & TAUGHT BY ITALIAN SURFACE FINISHES IN UK
System overview
Klondike Classic is Valpaint’s original textured metallic wall finish. When applied with a brush and plastic trowel, it creates a surface that behaves more like metallic plaster than conventional paint — layered, directional and alive under light. This guide describes the UK application method used and taught by Italian Surface Finishes.
The Klondike Classic system is typically built as:
- Smooth, sound, dry substrate (plaster / plasterboard) prepared and filled as required.
- Valpaint primer or tinted basecoat appropriate to the Klondike system, rolled evenly.
- First coat of Klondike Classic — continuous metallic layer.
- Second coat of Klondike Classic — brushed and trowelled to create metallic movement and texture.
- Optional clear sealer in higher‑wear zones.
Step‑by‑step method
-
Substrate preparation
Ensure the surface is clean, dry, stable and smooth. Fill cracks and imperfections, sand and remove dust. Any glossy or critical areas should be lightly abraded and primed according to the Klondike system sheet. -
Primer / basecoat
Apply the specified Valpaint primer or tinted basecoat using roller, working to a uniform, streak‑free finish. This base colour will subtly influence the final metallic reading. Allow to dry completely. -
First Klondike Classic coat
Using a soft synthetic brush or spalter, apply a thin, even coat of Klondike Classic over the entire surface. At this stage the aim is continuity, not heavy texture. Allow to dry thoroughly (normally overnight). -
Second coat — creating texture & movement
Apply a second thin coat with the brush. While the product is still wet, work in sections using a clean plastic trowel, compressing lightly to reveal metallic highlights and control the direction of the grain. Use irregular strokes, maintaining coherence across the whole wall. -
Edge and detail control
Pay particular attention to edges, corners and areas around sockets and switches. Keep movements consistent and avoid “stopping” mid‑wall where joints could remain visible. -
Optional clear protection
After full curing (around 7 days at 20 °C), apply a compatible clear protective finish in high‑traffic or high‑contact zones to improve cleanability and resistance to marking.

Professional tips from the London Studio
- Brush choice matters — use a soft brush or spalter to avoid harsh “comb” marks.
- Keep the trowel clean — frequently wipe the plastic trowel edge; dried product can scratch or drag.
- Work in pairs on larger walls — one applicator lays on product while a second follows with the trowel to organise movement.
- Check under project lighting — evaluate the finish under the actual lighting design (downlights, wall washers) to ensure the metallic movement reads correctly.
- Always sample first — agree a sample board for texture strength and direction with the client/designer before starting site work.
Safety & environment
Klondike Classic is a water‑based, low‑VOC decorative coating suitable for residential, retail and hospitality interiors when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Ensure good ventilation during application and drying.
- Wear gloves and eye protection; avoid prolonged skin and eye contact.
- Do not discharge product or wash water into drains or watercourses.
- Store sealed between +5 °C and +30 °C; protect from frost and direct heat.
